Day 5: Greenwich (the Prime Meridian, the Cutty Sark) or a free day for shopping.

London in 7 days: the full experience

Day 6: a football stadium visit — Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (the most authentic neighbourhood), Emirates, or Stamford Bridge. Our son picked Tottenham, and he still talks about it more than the London Eye.

What eats up more time than you'd expect

Queuing without booking ahead. Tower of London, the London Eye, the Harry Potter Studio Tour — skip the pre-booked ticket and you can lose two hours standing in line.
The Tube in the first couple of days. Learning to use it properly eats up half a real day, even for adults who think they've got it figured out.
Supermarkets. We have never once seen a teenager leave a Marks & Spencer quickly. It's part of the experience, honestly.

Flights are the first big line item, and the one that swings the most. In our experience, flights can run anywhere from £50–£80 per person in low season booked well ahead, up to £250 or more over Easter or summer if you book late.

What we learned: book at least two months ahead for school holidays, and set up price alerts on Skyscanner or Google Flights for your specific route. Where to stay in London with a family: real options by budget

Accommodation is, without question, the most expensive line item on a London trip for families. A central hotel with a family room or two connecting rooms can easily run £130–£260 a night, and more than that in peak season.

The alternatives we've seen work best for families with teenagers:

Apartment via Airbnb or Booking: usually cheaper for a family of 4 because you pay for the whole place, not per room. Location matters a lot here — Stratford, Elephant & Castle or Bethnal Green are reasonable, well-connected choices on the Tube.
Hotel with connecting or family rooms: more comfortable, but pricier. Ibis, Premier Inn or Travelodge have affordable options if you book ahead and don't mind being a bit outside the centre.
Anywhere outside Zone 1: a Zone 2 location gets you 15–20 minutes from the centre for meaningfully less per night.

We stayed in a Zone 1 hotel once — comfortable, but pricey. On the second trip we booked a Zone 2 apartment, and the difference was almost £100 a night.

Adding it all up realistically for a week with four people (two adults, two teenagers):

Transport, 7 days: £190–£220 for the four of us (with the daily cap)

Ballpark total: between £2,180 and £3,500 for a week with four people. Some travel it for less by being austere with accommodation and activities; others spend considerably more with a central hotel and lots of paid extras.

The key thing about London is that the budget is very elastic. The city has something for nearly every price range, but it's also very easy to overspend without keeping track.

What surprised them most about the cost

When we said we were going to London, both teenagers had their own budget expectations. Our son assumed football would be the most expensive part of the trip. He was right. Premier League tickets can run £80–£120 per person depending on the match and club — and that's if you can find them at all.

What genuinely surprised him was the Natural History Museum: completely free, interactive, with a blue whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling and the dinosaurs. He walked in expecting to be mildly interested and walked out saying it was one of the best museums he'd ever seen. Cost: zero.

Our daughter insisted on the London Eye and admitted afterwards the money could have gone elsewhere. This itinerary isn't theoretical — it's what we actually did, plan changes included, the moments when someone declared they were "done with museums," and the afternoon we ended up in Notting Hill purely by accident and it turned out to be the best part of the day.

You won't see everything. Nobody does. This itinerary prioritises what genuinely works with teenagers: a mix of culture, outdoor space, atmosphere, and one or two higher-adrenaline stops for the days that need it. Everything here runs on public transport — no tours required.

In the afternoon, Covent Garden matches teenagers' pace perfectly: street performers, shops, the covered market atmosphere, and Seven Dials nearby for anyone after independent shops. Leicester Square is 10 minutes away for evening atmosphere or a cinema.

Hyde Park in the morning: it's enormous and there's something for everyone. Teenagers can wander on their own while the adults rest near the Serpentine. In summer the lake has activities; in winter the park has its own charm under the mist.

Mid-morning, the Natural History Museum: free entry, with the blue whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling in the main hall and the dinosaurs as the star attraction. It's one of the best natural history museums in the world. The V&A is right across the road: decorative arts, fashion, ceramics, photography — more interesting than it sounds, and also free.

Free afternoon in South Kensington: a good neighbourhood for a calmer dinner than the centre, with decent options at reasonable prices.

Day 5: Greenwich or Notting Hill (depending on the group)

We build the last day around two options, depending on the group's mood:

Option A — Greenwich: Greenwich Park is one of London's best, with city views from the hill. The Royal Observatory, the Prime Meridian line marked on the ground, the Cutty Sark (a Victorian clipper ship) and the free National Maritime Museum. You get there by DLR or boat from the centre, which turns the journey itself into part of the experience. Good for groups who like history and open space.

Option B — Notting Hill: Portobello Road Market, the colourful house fronts, a neighbourhood feel the centre doesn't have. If you land on a Saturday, the market is in full swing. Better for teenagers who prefer street atmosphere over monuments.

We ended up in Notting Hill through a last-minute change of plan, and it turned into the most unexpectedly good afternoon of the whole trip. Sometimes the itinerary you didn't plan is the best one.
